How I Learned to Hate Rock 'n' Roll
Information Page
First released in 1996, this song was a bonus track of the Pet Shop Boys song "Se A Vida É", the second single from their album Bilingual. This song is about a dislike of rock music shared by Neil and Chris. Although the song has few lyrics, it gets its meaning across very easily. The main criticisms of rock music expressed in the song are the tendency of rock musicians to give in to conformity while preaching non-conformity ("everybody does what everybody does"), produce ugly sounds and even uglier sentiments, and dismiss important, beautiful things just for the sake of doing so.
Someone states the obvious
Someone sneers at all you love
Someone preaches ugly manners
Excluding some, including me
This is how I learned to hate rock 'n' roll
This is how I learned to hate rock 'n' roll
All feelings blunted, all passion spent
Everybody does what everybody does
All the broken promises
To recreate a status quo
This is how I learned to hate rock 'n' roll
This is how I learned to hate rock 'n' roll
