First released in 1987, this song was included on the Pet Shop Boys second studio album, Actually. It was not released as a single from that album, but the song's popularity grew among fans ultimately leading to it being re-recorded several times in different versions. "I Want to Wake Up" is about unrequited love, specifically the pain of being in love with someone who doesn't love you back.
